Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has clarified that a recent incident involving the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas was not a crash but rather a minor technical issue that occurred on the ground. This announcement follows media reports of a serious airframe damage after a runway overshoot at a frontline airbase on February 7, where the pilot safely ejected due to suspected brake failure. HAL emphasized that the Tejas has an excellent safety record and is working closely with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to analyze the incident and ensure a swift resolution. This event marks the third incident involving Tejas aircraft, with previous accidents occurring in March 2024 and November 2025. The context of this incident is significant as HAL faces delays in delivering the Tejas Mark 1A variant to the IAF, attributed mainly to GE Aerospace's failure to meet engine supply deadlines. In February 2021, the Indian defense ministry had signed a contract worth ₹48,000 crore for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets, followed by another contract in September last year for 97 jets worth ₹62,370 crore. The Tejas is recognized for its versatility in high-threat environments, capable of conducting various missions including air defense and maritime reconnaissance.
