Supreme Court-mandated review flags lapses in air monitoring systems across Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court-appointed expert committee has highlighted significant deficiencies in the air monitoring systems across Delhi-NCR, raising concerns about the reliability of data, technology implementation, quality audits, and the adequacy of institutional staffing. The report by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) emphasizes that these lapses hinder effective air quality management in the region, which is already grappling with severe pollution issues. The findings come at a critical time as the government seeks to enhance its strategies for tackling air pollution, a persistent problem exacerbated by industrial emissions, vehicular pollution, and seasonal agricultural burning. Addressing these gaps is essential for implementing robust air quality measures, and the committee has called for immediate reforms to ensure accurate monitoring and reporting. The recommendations serve as a wake-up call for authorities in the National Capital Region to reassess their current air quality management frameworks and take decisive action to protect public health and the environment.
