Study maps future glacial lakes
A recent study conducted by researchers from IIT Guwahati has identified 493 high-risk sites for glacial lake formation in the Eastern Himalayas. As climate change accelerates, glaciers in this region are melting at an alarming rate, leading to the potential for glacial lakes, which can pose significant risks of flooding and landslides to nearby communities. The research emphasizes the urgent need for monitoring and management strategies to mitigate these hazards. The Eastern Himalayas, known for their rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, making this study critical for local populations and policymakers. The findings aim to guide efforts in risk assessment and disaster preparedness in a region that is already facing ecological and environmental challenges due to global warming.
