SIR hearing phase ends in West Bengal, 6,61,000 more names likely to be deleted

The hearing phase of the Special Summary Revision (SIR) in West Bengal has concluded, with approximately 661,000 names expected to be removed from the electoral rolls. Election officials reported that out of this total, 498,000 individuals failed to appear for their hearings, while an additional 163,000 were deemed ineligible to vote. This significant reduction in the electoral list is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy and integrity of voter registration in the state. The SIR process aims to update the electoral rolls by removing names of individuals who no longer qualify to vote, including those who may have passed away or relocated. As West Bengal prepares for upcoming elections, maintaining a reliable and updated electoral list is crucial for free and fair democratic processes. The election commission has emphasized the importance of public participation in these hearings, which are designed to address discrepancies and validate voter information effectively.
