Over 574,000 cases pending before consumer forums, govt tells Lok Sabha

The Indian government has reported to the Lok Sabha that over 574,000 cases are currently pending before consumer forums nationwide, highlighting significant delays in the resolution of consumer disputes. Additionally, as of December 31, 2025, there are 641 vacant positions across various state and district consumer commissions, which hampers the efficient functioning of these bodies. The backlog of cases underscores the urgent need for reforms in the consumer dispute resolution process, as many consumers face prolonged wait times to seek justice. The government’s acknowledgment of these challenges aims to draw attention to the necessity of filling the vacant posts and enhancing consumer protection mechanisms in India. This situation reflects broader systemic issues within the judicial and bureaucratic frameworks that need to be addressed to improve consumer rights enforcement and service delivery to the public.
