Mumbai metro pillar collapse: Fadnavis announces ex-gratia as one killed, MMRD imposes penalty on contractor

A tragic incident occurred in Mumbai when a section of the parapet of an under-construction metro project collapsed, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to several others. The debris fell onto an auto rickshaw and a car, prompting immediate medical attention for the injured, who have since been transported to local hospitals. In response to the accident, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia payment for the victim's family. Furthermore, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a penalty on the contractor responsible for the construction, highlighting the need for strict adherence to safety standards in infrastructure projects. This incident raises serious concerns about the oversight and safety protocols in place for ongoing construction across the city, as well as the urgency for enhanced measures to prevent such accidents in the future. The local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the causes of the collapse and ensure accountability.
