MeitY Notifies Fresh IT Rules to Regulate AI-Generated Content, Deepfakes on Social Media Platforms

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has introduced amendments to the IT Rules, 2021, aimed at enhancing regulation of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content and deepfakes on social media platforms. Announced on Tuesday, these new rules emphasize the importance of labeling AI-generated materials more flexibly, ensuring users are aware of the nature of the content they engage with. Moreover, the updated regulations specify clearer definitions of deepfakes and establish stricter timelines for the removal of inappropriate media. This move reflects the government's commitment to safeguard users from potential misinformation and abuse prevalent in the digital landscape, as the popularity of AI content continues to rise. The amendments are expected to hold users accountable for violations, thereby promoting responsible use of technology across social media channels.
