India To Build Its 1st Underwater Road-Rail Tunnel At Rs 18,000 Crore

The Indian government has greenlit a significant infrastructure project worth Rs 18,662 crore aimed at enhancing connectivity in Assam. This project will establish a four-lane access-controlled corridor stretching between Gohpur and Numaligarh. Notably, it will include the country's first-ever road-and-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, marking a milestone in Indian civil engineering. The corridor is expected to facilitate smoother transportation, boost economic growth in the region, and improve accessibility for local communities. This initiative aligns with the government's broader vision of modernizing infrastructure across India, particularly in the northeastern states, which have historically faced connectivity challenges. The construction is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities and attract further investment to the area, thereby contributing to the overall development of Assam and enhancing its strategic importance in the region.
