India Set To Resume Work On Wular Barrage, Stalled By Indus Waters Treaty

The Jammu and Kashmir government is poised to recommence construction on the Wular barrage, a key water management project that had been halted for nine months following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam. This barrage is designed to enhance water storage and management from the Jhelum River, an essential resource for the region's agriculture and ecology. The decision to resume work reflects the government's commitment to improving water security in Jammu and Kashmir, despite the complexities surrounding the IWT, which governs the water-sharing arrangement between India and Pakistan. The Wular barrage project is expected to play a crucial role in regulating river flow and mitigating flood risks, thereby supporting local communities and ecosystems. As tensions persist over water resources in the Indus basin, the advancement of this project underscores India's efforts to address regional water challenges while navigating diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
