Guj HC Issues Notices To Central And State Govts On PIL Flagging AI Misuse For Deepfake Content

The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to both the Central and State Governments in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating deepfake content. The PIL highlights the growing concern over the potential dangers posed by deepfakes, which can distort reality and mislead the public. In its directive, the court has called for the implementation of a mandatory watermarking system for all AI-generated data to ensure transparency and to facilitate the identification of such content. Furthermore, it has emphasized the need for a stringent prohibition on the distribution and dissemination of deepfake materials in real time. This legal action reflects a broader global trend towards regulating AI technologies to prevent misuse and protect individuals from misinformation. As deepfake technology becomes more sophisticated, the call for regulatory measures gains urgency, underscoring the need for a robust framework to manage the ethical implications of AI in media. The case highlights the critical balance between technological innovation and the necessity for accountability in its application.
