Congress plans farmers’ stir on US deal in five states and 1 UT

The Indian National Congress has announced a strategic campaign to mobilize farmers against the proposed trade deal between India and the United States, which they argue could adversely impact local agriculture. This initiative will focus on six states and one Union Territory identified as likely to suffer the most from increased imports of American agricultural products. The Congress party aims to raise awareness and galvanize support among farmers, highlighting concerns over the potential threat to their livelihoods and the domestic farming sector. This move comes in the wake of rising discontent among agrarian communities regarding trade policies that favor foreign imports at the expense of local farmers. By organizing protests and rallies, the Congress hopes to challenge the government’s stance on the trade deal, calling for more protective measures for Indian agriculture. The party's leadership believes that by aligning with farmers' interests, they can reclaim support in rural areas ahead of upcoming elections, leveraging the growing unease about the implications of global trade agreements on local economies.
