Apple faces Indian engineer’s bias lawsuit
Apple Inc. is facing a discrimination lawsuit filed by Anita Nariani Schulze, an Indian engineer, in California. Schulze alleges that her two male managers, one from India and the other from Pakistan, subjected her to workplace bias reflective of cultural prejudices, treating her as inferior and excluding her from critical meetings while favoring male colleagues. Despite receiving favorable performance reviews, she claims she was denied bonuses and micromanaged, attributing this treatment to sexism, racism, and discrimination based on national origin. The case highlights broader issues of workplace discrimination within Silicon Valley, particularly involving South Asian cultural biases. A judge has ruled that Schulze's claims are sufficiently substantiated to proceed, although her request to represent a wider group of female employees at Apple was denied due to insufficient evidence of a systemic issue. This lawsuit echoes a separate case against Cisco Systems, where allegations of caste-based discrimination have also surfaced, drawing attention to the challenges faced by employees from diverse backgrounds in the tech industry.
